The Electronic Tool Integration Platform
The International Journal on Software
Tools for Technology Transfer (STTT) offers
a concrete technology transfer support via the
related Electronic Tool Integration
(ETI) platform, which enables users to
experiment with tools, both in isolation and in
combination, in order to gain practical
experience with the concepts contained in the
journal papers.
The ETI platform is intended to serve
as a Web-based active repository that enables
users to experiment with tools on-line. It is
designed to allow this experimentation with
minimum expertise; it is intended to enable
newcomers to easily orient themselves in the
fast growing panorama of tools.
ETI is not a distribution
platform; tool builders whose contributions are
incorporated into the ETI will retain
full legal rights and also responsibilities for
their software.
A Special Section devoted to ETI provides a
fairly detailed description of the platform,
spanning the philosophy which led us to its
creation, architectural and organizational
concerns, the concrete description of the
integration of the (sample) tools of this
issue, and a sample user session.
Tool builders interested in publishing their
software via the ETI should submit a
description of their software, and the software
itself, to the ETI co-ordinator. The
tool will be reviewed in a manner similar to
that used for paper submissions, and upon
acceptance it will be incorporated into the
platform in cooperation with the ETI
team.
Typically, integrated tools should also have a
corresponding paper in the journal describing
their purpose and use in a way accessible to
non-specialists.
The ETI Online Service's Functional Characteristics
The ETI online service plays a `public service' role, offering a unique and varied profile of functionalities. It is in fact at the same time
- a documentation site, thus it contains a repository of service and tool related information complemented by links to other websites,
- an independent tool presentation and evaluation site, giving users the possibility of direct, hands-on experience with a wealth of available (stand-alone) tools and (integrated) tool functionalities, and also
- a forum for discussing tool and application-specific profiles, including an ETI Online Forum where users may give feedback, propose case studies, and report on their experiences.
